Jade and Pearl are both from the Antelope Herd near Wendover, Utah. She in her dark bay coat is adorned with lots of “chrome” similar to Pearl. She has four white stockings and a blaze face. Jade has a mane of dreadlocks that have fascinated professional cameras. Her photos appear in an art gallery in Park City, Utah.
The four “gems” ( Pearl, Jade, Jasper and Beryl) were exposed to distemper at the holding facility. Shortly after their adoption, in 2002, they began showing symptoms. One at a time each baby contracted distemper. Jade was hardest hit and took months to recover. Their growth seems to be stunted and their training was postponed to avoid stressing them. They remained at the Kayenta Korrals for two months before being released on the Ranch.
Jade is her own woman. She is self-assured, thoughtful, and opinionated. She quickly captures your heart.
2009 Update:
Although Jade is one of the most photographed of our herd, she loves her new job wearing a saddle and going over jumps with Jasper. Along with Jasper, we plan to move her into our schooling group this summer. She will get a lot of practice with the advanced riders first, but shows a natural inclination for care-taking and horse-sense that will make her an excellent children's ride.
2010 Update:
Jade continued her riding education but primarily she partnered with our youth-at-risk programs and was an incredible teacher. She has such a calm presence and is so self-contained that she can't help but guide others to the peaceful, loving place where she exists.
2011 Update:
Sadly, we lost Jade this spring. There are no words to describe the loss we feel. She touched the hearts of everyone here and all the children and adults she interacted with during our programs.
