Our Horses: Springtime

Springtime's elegance is apparent in her beautiful chiseled head and her Arabian-like refinement. Another member of the Maverick-Medicine Herd in Nevada, she was adopted in 1997. Springtime is a dark, glowing bay.

Springtime was always mild-mannered and easy to work with until an unfortunate incident happened a the ranch. A hay string got around Blackhawk's neck and a ranch worker and his sons used this as an excuse to rope him from a pick-up truck. Of course Blackhawk pulled loose and spent all night racing around the pasture trying to get rid of the rope and join the security of the herd. The rope must have wrapped around the other horses' legs and/or Springtime was also roped because she later would not allow her legs to be touched and had become very anxious and distrustful.

Wild horses do not forget being trapped and endangered. It has taken a year fo additional work to overscome the frightful experience and she is still uncertain about having her feet handled. Springtime spent an August in Wyoming roping sagebrush and herding cattle. She settled down and regained her confidence. Last summer, Mary Lee used her in lessons and she attended her first show and won a ribbon. Springtime is brave, tucks her knees to her chin and enjoys jumping. She is a very attractive Large Children's Pony Hunter. Sprintime needs another year or two of training in order to develop flying lead changes and to jump three foot courses.

2009 Update:

Springtime was Marcia's main ride until one day one of Mary Lee's students in her advanced class needed a horse. Marcia said she could ride Springtime, and the story began. As it turned out, Sprintime loves to jump and is very good at it.  The next day Marcia rode her in the big arena, and she headed for every jump.  Since she is so into jumping, and Marcia is not, Marcia turned her over to the advanced riding class. She loves every minute of her new career.  She loves being with the advanced horses and riders and glows in every performance.  She has truly found her niche.  Alicia Simons and Springtime are conquering new heights together.
