Our Horses: Teton

Teton's name could be Shy Boy. His childhood partner in instant startle response was First Star. They hung out together when they could relax enough. Teton is also a gelding with cute white markings. Adopted in 1997,he is from the Medicine-Maverick Herd in Nevada.Similar in an over-reactive nature, Teton and First Star have very different personalities.

Teton is extremely shy and lacks the intense curiosity First Star has. First Star will flee, face-up, and then step forward and address the object of his fear. Teton will flee and will timidly stay behind the other horses. Mary Lee believes that Teton was 2-4 months younger than the other weanlings and this affected his development and socialization. Teton is a fringe herd member without a center position or girlfriend.

Teton injured his hoof and lost the outside quarter of the coronet band. He was turned out at the ranch to heal and his training stopped. It took a year and a half for is hoof to completely heal. While on the ranch, we have noticed that he has gained some confidence and attempts some leery contact with humans.

Teton has been ridden six times but the training money has been used up. His future is uncertain. This summer, 2006, Teton will replace First Star in our workshops. many people identify with his fears and desire to be with people and feel okay.

2009 Update:

Teton is coming around, as well.  He participated in one of our groundwork classes and really made some progress.  He chooses to be with people and he tries very hard not to be scared. He is fun for people in our M.E.E.T. programs to work with because his emotions are so close to the surface.  Teton is very authentic.  What you see with him is what there is.  He is very instructive for people who are working on their presentation, their own fears, and their own ability to manage their emotions. People delight in watching how hard he tries to respond rather than react and control his behavior even when he is afraid.
